One of the problems I have with Christians is that so many of us are pessimistic about so many things  (and full disclosure: I slip into this category myself from time to time, during which time I wrestle with self-loathing because I don’t like being this way). In the last week I’ve personally heard Christians complain about the following things:

  • How wicked the world is
  • How crappy our president is
  • How bad the economy is
  • How America is slipping away

I was reading John’s Gospel this morning and these words impressed upon my mind. “The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.” (John 1:5). I’m fairly certain that means we are winning.  You know, when a basketball team is winning, in their time-outs they don’t talk about how pathetic the conditions of the court are, or they don’t worry about how poorly the other team is playing.  They don’t lament that the game is taking too long or that the referees are calling the game unfairly.  In their time-outs, the winning team is still strategizing, still planning to play a strong game, and their lead should give them confidence to play their best.

Christian, stop worrying about your president.  Stop worrying about the wickedness of this world. Stop fretting over the economy. Stop complaining about your liberties being stripped away.  Instead pray for your president, share the Gospel with the lost, rest in the provision of your God, and enjoy the freedom you have in Jesus Christ.  Jesus says, “But seek first othe kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.” (Matthew 6:33). I’ve heard people use the phrase that a person is so heavenly minded that he’s of no earthly value. Jesus calls baloney on that one.  Kosher baloney.

Let the Gospel shape your concerns. It’s fine to be a concerned citizen of this country, but as Christians the Gospel should be shaping those concerns, not the pressures of this world.  Worried about the economy? Become generous because Jesus gave everything for a world that didn’t deserve anything.  God will supply your needs. Worried about how America seems to be slipping away? Remember that your first citizenship is in the kingdom of God, a citizenship that cannot be taken from you. Countries fall, kings and presidents fail, but our God reigns forever and his chosen will reign with him!

Keep looking up!
